New project: The film room

This week we were given a group project to recreate a 3D scene from a movie. We began by getting in our group to discuss what movie we will recreate.

We chose to go with the movie Chappie specifically the warehouse bedroom scene. We chose to go with this scene as when completed it will make a dynamic and interesting 3D model, due to the wide range of interesting textures, lighting and detail.

After deciding what film room we were going to create (took about 10 minutes). We began to analyzing the scene whilst creating an asset list which we would continue to update as the project progressed.

With the asset list created and room measurements sorted we began to create a quick white box version of the room.

White box and asset list done, we were able to allocate the many different room asset to the different members of the group. On the asset list an approximate tri count for each asset was noted down. With this information and assets allocated to me (assets: Speakers Set, Shark Teddy, Cutlery) I began modeling my first and major assets the speaker set.

Visual Design

Lecture: Composition.

On the Tuesday during Visual Studies we had a lecture and an extensive presentation on composition and different artist of different genres used specific techniques the aid their work. An example of this is how architects use a lot of symmetry grids and guides to support their work. Using this technique they were able to create structurally stable buildings with dynamic esthetics. Artist have began to introduce these grids and guides to further their composition techniques and add realistic 3D elements to their painting and sculpture using the same composition techniques.

Critical Studies

3 positive things about year 1

  • I passed into second year

  • Zombie truck best project last year and most successful pipeline of work

  • Adapted to life in a new city

3 things to improve for year 2

  • Time management for projects

To overcome this a daily goal will be created to have to project completed in time

  • Presentation Skills

Carefully read briefs and time specifications on the slides for quicker information outload.

  • File management

Create a neat folder and file structure for both home office and unilabs

Plans for next week:

  • To begin unwrapping and texturing the first asset (speaker set)

  • Continue to practice painting and drawing trying to implicate composition techniques learnt in the visual design lecture.
