3rd Year Begins - Week 1

This week we started our first project for 3rd year. The Style Matrix Brief allowed us to choose 3 briefs based on the style we wanted to develop, each brief had a 3 week deadline. Since I wanted to focus on the Semi-Realistic Style the three briefs i picked where as follows; Sci-fi Blaster, Floating Home and "whats behind the door". I picked these three as they allowed me to practise asset modelling and environment designs which are the two areas i want to focus on during my path to becoming an environment artist.

Pre-Production

We the three briefs picked I began by making a document that covers and overview of the brief, schedule and brief details e.g Tri counts. Below you are able to see the document

After i picked my briefs i was able to begin creating mood boards, With the first set of mood boards i wanted to capture and gather all reference for ideas that came to mind as soon as reading the briefs, this will allow me to get a wider view of what each project is going to look like, before each project i will then make more focused mood boards around the main idea.

This is my blasters mood board, instead of actually concentrating on the designs of the gun i focused most of the images and notes on the form and overall concept of the guns.

With the through the door mood board i decided on getting rooms with designs that i thought was do-able in 3 weeks and had a deep immersive colour scheme. the lay out of the rooms was also another big focus.

With the floating home brief that had to include balloons. A old legendary Samurai general's home floating i the sky held up by blimp balloons. I had a idea straight away there for i created the mood board based around that.

With all the pre-production work done i began with my pistol concept. Before i began to sketch my concepts, I made a mood board for pistols and shotguns that fit around what i wanted to create. Since the gun had to have two functions i thought of making a gun that was a primary weapon and a secondary weapon in one. A sidearm pistol that shot instant revive syringes (brings other players to life instantly) and a primary pulse shotgun for close range high damage, however both these are one gun. By putting the pistol into the shotgun it becomes a longer range semi-auto fusion rife combing the syringes with the high powered pulse lasers to make a fast firing bullet (hence the fusion name).

Pistol Concepts

I started the to sketch the pistols. On the mood board there was a concept of a nail gun, i really like how that fit with my own idea and instead of it shooting nails it shoots out the instant-revive syringes. Due to being a 3 week project i didn't want to spend to much time on the concepting therefore i went this concept and tweaked it a bit to fit my style.

Using the Concept i was able to start the modelling the pistol changing things up as i model. By the firday of the week i was able to finish the Low Poly.

Shotgun Concepts

With the pistol low poly done i began the first concepts for the shotgun. With the shotgun i wanted to mix future tech with modern day guns. I made a quick mood board concentrating on shotguns spliting the shape and form of realstic guns with sci-fi ones. Photo bashing some guns I was able to come out with 4 detailed concepts of ideas i wanted to move forward with.
