We are now back at uni with an official teaching week, which only means a new project. Our brief for this, was to simply design two characters that varied from one another for visual, studies and create one of these two, characters for game production.

Before I began collecting reference and a general idea of the ascetics for the, character I was going to produce in 3D. I gave myself an overall theme for both characters to keep the ascetics and overall form on the same level. I wanted to mix a genre that doesn't normally go with a certain culture, with this I wanted to mix my favorite genre (sci-fi) and the African culture, I felt this was a genre and and culture we don't really see in any modern day creative media industry. A traditional African warrior with sci-fi amour was the ground work for gathering reference.

I began by listing simple attributes of the character and then began gathering various images based on these attributes.

With the general idea and mood board,of the main character done, i used this as a spring board for my next character. I really liked the idea of mixing two opposing ,themes, into one, so with this i wanted to make my character have a mix between hardsurface sci-fi and the light elegant royal clothing. Due to the brief asking for two characters varying from, each other it was a simple decision to make this character female.

The mood board and general idea was all done with in the first day of getting the brief. Allowing me to get cracking with concepting for both characters.

I began conecpting the first character, with simple brush strokes getting down forms and postions, normally I would begin with simple silhouettes but this time I began by drawing different characters with different forms and positioning to allow me to get a grasp of the mood and feel the character. I began to concept the first character with the intention of doing most of the design iterations on a 3Dplatform. I felt I,would do most of design work on a 3D platform for the main character as this was the only character I,was going to make in 3D, therefore i wanted the character's form to read well from each angle and only using drawing to get a feel of the character's mood.

I felt that number 1 held the posture and mood that I wanted to convay therefore I used this as the base for moving forward with the concepting. As the first concept ideas where based on already existing characters, therefore I began concepting characters with the overall design in mind.

This week I also began concepting my second character.

During these conceptes I concentrated mainly on the royal guard aspect of the character. by covering each of there faces it added a sense of mystory this was done to give the player questions such as 'who is under the mask', 'why are they whereing a mask' and so on. This tells a story without the use of narrative and keeps the players talking.
